I’m a landscape painter, an award-winning nonfiction children’s picture book illustrator and an educator with extensive professional experience, including K-12 classroom teaching, online teaching, curriculum development, creating and conducting professional development workshops for teachers, public speaking and making connections between art, science, observation and picture books. I’ve created programs that emphasize observation as the foundation of art and science and I’ve presented these ideas to tens of thousands of students and thousands of teachers in hundreds of schools across the country and around the world.
I’ve illustrated twelve mostly-nonfiction picture books for children. Awards include: the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award; a Reading Rainbow book selection (over 250,000 sold); an ALA Notable book; an IRA Teachers’ Choice; a Smithsonian Magazine Notable Book for Children selection; three John Burroughs List of Nature Books for Young Readers selections; and numerous “Starred” reviews. In addition, I have two books included in “1001 best books of the 20th Century” in the NY Times Parents Guide to the Best Books for Children (1st & 3rd ed.).
